Description
Controlling Energy and Carbon Emissions in Buildings
It’s becoming more and more important for built environment professionals to be able to take part in informed conversations about methods for reducing energy use and carbon emissions. In this online CPD course you’ll be informed by current research, data and case studies, with insights from industry experts and learn why reducing energy use and carbon emissions at different stages of the building life cycle is so important.
This six-hour CPD course focuses on energy use and carbon emissions in the built environment, how ‘energy use’ and ‘carbon emissions’ differ, and how they are linked. It looks at how carbon emissions can be measured, and introduces practical ways in which carbon emissions can be cut at different stages in the building life cycle. It pays particular attention to the end-of-life stage, including the circular economy and approaches to sequestered carbon.
Learning Outcomes
We’ve designed this course specifically to help you to join the conversation, and to build your knowledge and skills to prepare you to make an impact in your own roles. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
-
- identify the stages of carbon use in the building life cycle;
- explain how and why embodied carbon accounts for a large proportion of the built environment’s carbon emissions;
- identify measures that can be taken to reduce operational energy and carbon;
- list the carbon emissions associated with the end-of-life impact of a building, and why safe reuse, disposal and recycling of materials is important.
Time commitment
The total estimated study time for completing this course is 6 hours. This estimate includes time for you to read or view a resource more than once, as well as time for you to take notes and undertake the online assessment.
Within this module you will find a combination of audio and visual learning methods. You work through the online course yourself following the guidance materials provided, at your own pace, wherever you may be. You can stop and restart at different sections and further explore the material and information available.
Course structure
The course content is divided into the following topics:
- Carbon definitions for the built environment
- Carbon definitions and the building life cycle
- Embodied carbon
- Operational carbon and energy use
- Whole life carbon
- End of life emissions and the circular economy
- Carbon sequestration.
As a fully online, self-managed course you are able to stop and restart the course as you progress, working at a time and place that suits your needs.
