The world’s urban population is set to increase dramatically in the next three decades with most of this rapid urbanisation occurring in towns and cities of less than one million inhabitants, referred to collectively in the Rapid Planning Toolkit as ‘secondary cities’. The speed and scale of growth means that managing urban areas, and planning for new sustainable urban extensions, will be one of the most important challenges facing cities and societies in the 21st century.
Rapid Planning Toolkit, the Prince’s Foundation
These FREE online courses are part of a series of online courses designed to help those interested in sustainable city design and planning follow a simple 4-step process known as the Rapid Planning Toolkit for Urban Expansion (a methodology designed by The Prince’s Foundation in collaboration with several partners). The courses have been developed by University College of Estate Management (UCEM). The online learning platform of this course is designed for both learners and implementers but whatever journey you are on, you should start with the introductory course that will take approximately 8 hours. This can be undertaken at your preferred pace, which might be a full day, or one hour a week for 8 weeks. During this course you will learn about the key concepts and importance of the Toolkit, rapid urbanisation, climate change, cities and walkable neighbourhoods.
Once you have undertaken the introductory course , you can move on to the Implementing Step 1 course. This course is focused on implementation: how to use the Toolkit in a real life scenario on the ground. If you don’t have a real-life scenario in which to implement the Toolkit, this course will still be interesting and perhaps you might try a hypothetical example, but please be aware that in doing so not all the practical tasks will be possible.

Overview of The Rapid Planning Toolkit for Urban Expansion
The world’s urban population is set to increase dramatically in the next three decades with most of this rapid urbanisation occurring in towns and cities of less than one million inhabitants, referred to collectively in the Rapid Planning Toolkit as ‘secondary cities’. The speed and scale of growth means that managing urban areas, and planning for new sustainable urban extensions, will be one of the most important challenges facing cities and societies in the 21st century.
The Rapid Planning Toolkit is a simple and practical tool which intends to assist city leaders, local and national governments, built environment professionals and local communities in creating robust and implementable walkable neighbourhood plans in rapidly growing cities or towns. In collaboration with UCEM, The Prince’s Foundation have created this online learning resource which will guide users through implementing the Toolkit in their city.
