Aims

This online CPD course provides you with an introduction to the law surrounding freehold covenants in England and Wales.

Covenants made between freeholders represent a way in which freeholders can help to regulate the use of land and to preserve the character of the neighbourhood. Often covenants are entered into when land is sold and the seller retains adjoining land or when a developer builds a housing estate. The developer will usually wish to preserve the character of the estate.

Covenants have their origins in the law of contract and are enforceable as a contract between the original parties. However, under certain circumstance it is possible for freehold covenants to be enforceable by and against successors of the original parties. In such cases covenants are regarded as property rights.

An understanding of the different types of freehold covenants and their potential impact is essential for anyone in the property industry.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Certificate

You will be tested with an online quiz at the end of this course. You must achieve 80% or more to successfully complete the course. Additional attempts will be permitted should you not be successful on your first attempt.

On successful completion of the course you will receive a UCEM certificate of completion for 5 hours of formal CPD.
