Cost Management
A foundation course designed to develop core knowledge and understanding of cost management tools, methods, and application. This course is structured to step through a typical construction project focussing on best practice at each stage of the process.
Course Aims
The main aim of this training course is to give the delegates a level of understanding in respect to:
- cost planning procedure
- cost analysis and benchmarking factors affecting construction cost,
- post contract quantity surveying best practice,
- procedure for assessment of variations and valuations
- final account procedure
- and a level of understanding in respect to delay and distribution assessment
Tutor Support
The tutor support on this course comes in two main forms:
1)Online forums
2)Live webinars
The learning webinars sessions delivered via Zoom will support the delegates and help consolidate their knowledge. This is when the context of the learning will be discussed, when delegates will be shown how to use the theory they have learnt in their projects. The webinars are best attended live but will be recorded so that delegates can rewatch or catch up on any missed elements.
Objectives
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the role of the cost manager in a construction project throughout its entire duration by referring to local regulations, the work plan and relevant legislation.
- Understand the key factors that affect the cost of construction projects, apply them in the preparation of a cost plan, and analyze the results compared to previous projects.
- Benchmark against similar projects and understand how to adjust estimates in relation to time and location factors.
- Critically evaluate the role of the cost manager in contract administration. Perform variance assessments and critically evaluate the valuation evaluation process for the purposes of midterm assessments.
Course Structure
This online course is divided into units beginning with how a construction project is organised, how this relates to the plan of works, before moving on to review pre-contract factors, the Cost Manager role within the context of contract administration, the assessment of variation and valuation and closing with a review of the commercial close procedure and the assessment of delay and disruption claims. Each unit provides you with practical knowledge and skills, which you will gain by completing a series of activities and resources.
Time Commitment
The total estimated study time to complete this course is 52 hours spread over 10 weeks. This estimate includes the time needed to work on each of the topics, as well as to take notes and complete the reflection questions and knowledge checks. This course combines visual and audio learning methods. You will work yourself throughout the online course following the guidance material provided. You can stop and start again in different sections and explore the available material and information further.
Certificate
At the end of this course, you will complete a final quiz designed to assess your understanding and application of learning outcomes. Successful completion of the final test, you will be eligible to receive a personalized UCEM certificate. This certificate will confirm that you have completed 52 hours of professional development on the topic of cost management.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for the Cost Management short course; but participants find they get more out of the course if they are already involved in the industry in some way.

To maximize your learning experience, you’ll need access to:
- A personal computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile device with audio and video playback capability
- Internet access (broadband connection recommended)
- an up-to-date web browser (e.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge
- open PDF documents with programs such as Adobe.
Keep in mind that if you’re using a system with a firewall, you may need to allow pop-ups and access to YouTube.

Cancellation policy
UCEM Online Academy recognises that a change in circumstances can sometimes be unavoidable and that delegates who register for a scheduled event may need to withdraw or change their original registration. If you are unable to attend this scheduled CPD course you are booked on, you may request to substitute another person to attend in your place provided you notify us in writing at academy@ucem.ac.uk at least five working days before the event.
Refunds are calculated as follows upon receipt of the written request to academy@ucem.ac.uk
· More than 28 days before the course start date: UCEM Online Academy will retain 20% of the fees due.
· 28-14 days before the course start date: UCEM Online Academy will retain 50% of the fees due.
· Less than 14 days before the start date: UCEM Online Academy will retain 100% of the fees due.
In the unlikely event of UCEM Online Academy withdrawing a course, all course fees paid will be refunded, however UCEM Online Academy will not be liable for any other costs or losses incurred.
